Technical Brief: Shared Folders

This Technical Brief is a valuable resource to learn how to create Shared Folders on your LaCie professional server. While an exhaustive explanation of Windows® file permissions is beyond the scope of this Technical Brief, LaCie encourages users and network administrators to further their understanding via the numerous books, instruction manuals, courses, and web sites on this subject.

Shared Folders

Create Shared Folders (“shares”) on your LaCie professional server so that users and groups on the network may access data. Shares can be created for use with Windows or Linux workstations. The two file types for Shared Folders are:

  • SMB (Server Message Block) - Windows
  • NFS (Network File System) - Linux and virtualization

The LaCie professional server Dashboard makes it easy to create and configure SMB shares. If you wish to add NFS shares, launch Windows Remote Desktop Connection from any workstation on the network for access to your LaCie professional server. Once you have logged onto the server, you can use Server Manager to create NFS shares. This Technical Brief includes step-by-step instructions on how to create both SMB and NFS shares using your version of the Windows operating system.

As shares are created, you may set protocols, permissions, and quotas. However, permissions that are based on active directory accounts must be set from the same network and domain as your server.

Administrator

In order to review, confirm, or redefine the software settings on your LaCie professional server, you must have Administrative rights to the device.
