Hard Disk Heat Management

Heat Dissipation Design

This LaCie product's metal body is ideal for naturally dissipating internal drive heat. Its unique design actually draws heat away from the internal drive toward the external casing. The large surface area of the heat sink casing absorbs internal heat and dissipates it, keeping the drive safe and prolonging its life and reliability.

As a consequence, it is normal that the external casing is warm to the touch. Please make sure that the vent on the back bezel is not obstructed and that there is a natural airflow across the casing.

Upright, Stack & Rackmount Configuration

Heat dissipation is maximized when this LaCie product is in the upright position. When stacking LaCie products, please remember to attach the included rubber feet (if included) on the under side of your drives. This will allow for some airflow between your drives so that the heat dissipation can work effectively. LaCie does not recommend stacking or racking more than two drives on top of each other, especially if these drives are turned on simultaneously.

Cables and Connectors

Cable Management

This product includes a cable lock, a small plastic clasp that prevents cords from accidentally disconnecting.

Important Info: You can connect either the cable lock or a Kensington lock to your LaCie product, but not both at the same time. Note also that it's impossible to disconnect the cable lock without destroying it.

To use the cable lock:

  1. Insert the clasp's locking head into the lock slot.
  2. Make sure that the interface cable is connected to the product.
  3. String the interface cable through the open cable lock gate.
  4. Close and snap in place the cable lock gate.

USB 3.0

USB is a serial input/output technology for connecting peripheral devices to a computer. SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is the latest implementation of this standard, and it provides higher bandwidth and new power management features.

Transfer rates can attain up to 5 Gbits/s as opposed to USB 2.0's 480 Mbits/s. This means USB 3.0 is theoretically up to ten times faster than its predecessor.

Your LaCie drive is shipped with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 cable to ensure maximum data transfer performance when connected to a compatible USB 3.0 port. The cable will also work when connected to a USB 2.0 or 1.1 port, but drive performance will be limited to their respective transfer rates.

About RAID Modes

Refer to the table below for an overview of the different RAID modes, and see the descriptions for details.

RAID Mode Capacity Protection Speed Factory Default
RAID 0 (FAST) 100% None Excellent Yes
RAID 1 (SAFE) 50% Excellent OK No

RAID 0 (FAST): RAID 0, is the fastest RAID mode. In a RAID 0 array, the available capacities of each drive are added together so that one logical volume mounts on the computer. It offers the best performance but no protection in the case that a drive fails.

Caution: In a RAID 0 array, if one physical drive in the array fails, the data of all drives becomes inaccessible because parts of the data have been written to all drives.

RAID 1 (SAFE): RAID 1 provides data safety since all data is written to each drive at the same time. In the event of a single drive failure, data remains available on the other drive. Due to the time it takes to write the data twice, performance is slightly reduced. RAID 1 is a good choice when safety is more important than speed. However RAID 1 also reduces the available drive space by 50% due to the need to write each bit of data on each hard drive.

Replace Drive

Remove Drive

If your array is protected, ie in a RAID 1/SAFE mode, you can remove a drive without damaging the array and losing data, a process also referred to as “hot-swapping”. However, if you remove a drive from an unprotected (ie RAID 0/FAST) array, you may lose data.

Caution: After continuous use of the product, drives may be hot. Use caution when removing.

  1. The drive tray may be locked. To unlock it, use the included RAID selection tool to turn the lock until the slot is vertical.
  2. Draw out the drive tray by inserting your finger into the space behind the drive tray handle and pulling to disengage the drive.
  3. Grasp the drive tray handle and carefully extract the drive.

Replace Drive

Important info: If a hard drive that you have purchased from LaCie fails, please contact your LaCie reseller or LaCie Customer Support.

Note that for optimum storage use, the new drive should have equal or greater capacity than the drive it is replacing.

  1. Carefully insert the drive tray into an empty drive bay. When the drive tray is most of the way in and you feel resistance, press the drive tray handle firmly until you feel the drive snap into place and the drive tray handle is flush with the back of the product.
  2. Use the RAID selection/drive removal tool to lock the drive.
  3. The next steps depend on which RAID mode was in place when the old disk was removed:
    • If the RAID mode was 0 (FAST): all data stored on the device has been deleted, and you need to follow the steps below in order to reinitialize the RAID 0.
      1. Change the RAID mode to RAID 1 (SAFE) by following the instructions in Modify RAID Mode.
      2. Make sure that the RAID 1 mode (SAFE) is ready. This will be indicated by a steady blue LED on the front of the product, and the SAFE mode LED illuminated on the rear of the product.
      3. Turn off your product again and change the RAID mode back to RAID 0 (FAST), by following the same procedure as above.
      4. After a brief initialization, the LED indicating a clean RAID 0 (FAST) will be illuminated, and the front LED will become steady blue.
      5. Reformat the volume (refer to Formatting Instructions for details). Once this is complete, the volume for the clean RAID 0 arrray will mount on your computer.
    • If the RAID mode was 1 (SAFE):
      1. Connect the power supply and turn on the product.
      2. Drive synchronization will begin automatically. The front LED and two drive LEDs will blink blue until synchronization has completed.

Unmounting Volume(s)

This message will appear: “Safe to Remove Hardware” (or similar). It is now safe to disconnect the device.

Windows Vista & Windows 7 Users

From the System Tray (located in the lower right-hand side of your screen) click on the plug icon (note the white check mark inside a green circle).

A message will appear, detailing the devices that may be safely unmounted.

Select Eject for the device you wish to unmount. A message will appear notifying you that it is safe to remove it.

Mac Users

Drag the storage device icon to the Trash. (The icon pictured below is a generic USB device icon. Your LaCie storage may be represented by an icon that looks like the device itself.)

When the icon disappears from the desktop, the storage device can be disconnected.

Formatting and Partitioning

Standard LaCie storage devices will prompt you to run LaCie Setup Assistant when they are first connected to a computer (Windows or Mac). LaCie Setup Assistant helps you to quickly format the storage device according to your needs.

Read the information below carefully if you:

  • Abort LaCie Setup Assistant while it is formatting.
  • Wish to reformat your storage device after LaCie Setup Assistant has successfully completed.
  • Own a LaCie storage device that does not feature Setup Assistant (for example, select LaCie USB keys or RAID devices).
